Do It Yourself Library Shelving

Many book lovers don’t have a decent place to store their books. They may be lying all over the house drawing dust and in danger of having things spilled on them or just getting lost. If you have a do-it-yourself streak you can build your own library shelving and to your specifications. It is inexpensive and easy to do.

Items required to build:

  • Drill and drill bits

  • Screwdriver and wood screws

  • Saw

  • Measuring tape

  • Wood glue

  • Shelf brackets

  • Wall anchors

  • Wood shelving boards

  1. Think about the types of books you will be putting on the shelves. Height, width and weight. Books are typically heavy so use good strong woods such as ash, cherry or oak. They will not sag under pressure and will last much longer.

  2. Draw up a simple plan on how you want the shelving to look when done. Measure the area where you will be putting the shelves. Try to locate studs in the walls so the weight will be well supported. This is a must.

  3. Purchase the amount of wood you will need for the number of shelves you are putting in. Building a square set of shelves is quite easy. You can glue them together and then fasten permanently with wood screws. If you plan on painting or staining the shelving be sure to do that prior to mounting it on the wall.

  4. If you have a small shelving unit you can secure it to the studs you located. If it is larger you will also want to use wall-mounting brackets and secure both the top and bottom of the shelves to the wall for stability.
