Do It Yourself Pantry Shelving
Adequate storage space in today's kitchens is a must for cooking convenience. Yet, many homeowners do not have the luxury of a pantry for storing canned goods, dry foods and baking essentials. You may find do it yourself pantry shelving to be the answer to kitchen storing solutions.
Take a few minutes in your kitchen and determine what your best options are for a pantry. If you already have a pantry, you may just need to add additional pantry shelving. A kitchen without an existing pantry may have a closet nearby that could be remade into a pantry using do it yourself pantry shelving.
You can buy pre-made shelves from home improvement centers or cut your own from plywood. Pre-made shelves can be purchased to size with or without finishing. There are several different do it yourself shelf packages available from which to choose. It may just be a matter of selecting a functional size and color to match your existing pantry shelves. Some packages include brackets and screws for mounting. If the hardware is not included, you can easily purchase hardware separately.
If you prefer, you can purchase plywood, but it does involve a bit more measuring and finish work. To make your own plywood shelves will require measuring the space in the pantry or closet for each shelf. The plywood has to be cut and sanded according to shelf measurements. You can stain or paint the shelves to match existing pantry shelving. Shelves can be attached to the walls using shelf brackets and screws. Longer shelves holding more weight may require the extra step of finding wall studs and securing brackets with wall anchors.
- Purchasing pre-made pantry shelves offers the advantages of the wood already being cut and finished and often includes installation hardware. However, pre-made building materials will usually cost a lot more money. Buying your own plywood, measuring, cutting, finishing and installing is the cheaper method, but it requires a lot more time for building.
