Dog Games for a Toddler

A strong relationship between toddlers and the family dog can be achieved.  Fun and easy games can help build that strong bond between children and their dogs.  Many different activities can be played with a dog, cat or other family pets.  Please remember that young children should always be supervised when they are with any animals, including family pets.

  • Hide-and-seek is a great game a toddler or child of any age can play with their pet.  While the toddler finds a hiding place, the dog needs to be distracted or held by a parent.  Once the child is ready release the dog and the hunt is started.  Their dog will enjoy the search even more if a treat is waiting with the toddler.

  • While a toddler is in their high chair they can be given treats like apple slices, carrot sticks or unsalted pretzels.  As the child desires he could share the snack with their dog.  Always be sure that the snacks are appropriate for both the toddler and the pet.

  • Toddlers love bubbles and the family dog might enjoy them, too.  A bubble toy made for dogs can be purchased for this activity.  Both child and dog and try to pop the bubbles or the toddler can blow them for the dog to pop.  Because the bubble solution is flavored, (bacon or chicken) dogs love to pop these bubbles.  The solution is non-toxic so it will not burn eyes or cause an upset stomach when consumed.

  •  An adult or child can hide treats for toddlers and family pets to find.  Hide them in easy and hard places to make it a challenge for both.  Some treats should be put out of the pets reach but within the toddlers reach so he can have some he will be sure to find.  Remember to be sure the treats are suitable for both child and pet.

  •  Catch and tug-a-war are simple games that also be played between toddler and dog.  Stuffed animals, Frisbees and ropes are all great items to be used.
