How to Train a Cocker Spaniel
The Cocker Spaniel breed is very intelligent and easy to train. They are known to do well with people and other animals, and are known to be compliant to their owners’ wishes. Training your Cocker Spaniel will not be that hard of a task, except in the area of housebreaking them. They are known to be hard to house train.
- Socialize your Cocker Spaniel puppy right from the beginning. Give him or her the chance to get used to their new surroundings, but be sure to introduce them to people and animals as soon as possible and on a regular basis so that they are well socialized.
- Fence in a section of your yard if you do not already have a fenced in yard. You want to have a safe place where you can designate an area where your puppy is supposed to go potty. This will help with the potty training process.
- Use a crate at night and when you are not at home to prevent your Cocker Spaniel from having accidents in your home. Immediately bring them from their crate to their potty spot so that they can understand that this is where they are supposed to go potty.
- Exercise your Cocker Spaniel on a daily basis. If you do not have a fenced in yard where they can run and play, you should be sure to take your Cocker Spaniel on a walk every day to help them burn off some extra energy. This will decrease bad behavior in the home due to pent up energy.
- Use positive reinforcement when training your Cocker Spaniel. Never hit or yell at your Cocker Spaniel. Instead you should use a stern tone of voice and then put them in a time out spot so that they understand that they have done something wrong. This will help them to make a connection between the bad behavior and the punishment.
