How to Select a Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniels were bred to be hunting dogs; however, they have gained much popularity as a family pet due to their loving nature and high intelligence. If you are thinking about adding a Cocker Spaniel to your family you will not be disappointed by the wonderful breed.

  1. Research the breed to determine that a Cocker Spaniel is the right breed of dog for you and your family. This breed is known to get along well with people and other animals; however, they are often timid if not properly socialized.

  2. Locate a breeder in your area, or a rescue group that is specifically breeding Cocker Spaniels. If you choose a rescue group, the cost of your Cocker Spaniel will be significantly less than going through a breeder; however, you will more than likely not get a puppy from a rescue.

  3. Visit the Cocker Spaniel that you are considering adopting if you are going through a rescue. Ask them for information on the background of the dog. Observe the temperament of the dog as well. Be sure that he or she does not seem overly dominant or submissive in nature. You want the Cocker Spaniel to approach you with curiosity and interest not with aggressiveness or dominance.

  4. Observe the puppies together if you are purchasing a Cocker Spaniel from a breeder. Watch the actions of the puppies and how they interact with each other. Look for a puppy that is playful and fun loving, and not excessively barking or bullying the other puppies in the litter.

  5. Ask the breeder or rescue worker about the temperament of the dog or puppy. They have often spent a lot of time around them and will be able to give you an accurate description of their temperament and personality.
