How to Raise a Cocker Spaniel Puppy

Raising a cocker spaniel puppy takes time, patience, consistency and money.  When given the proper care, they are a happy and loyal dog that will provide excellent companionship.  It is important to have the right food, training techniques and proper veterinarian care when caring for your cocker spaniel puppy.

Getting Started

  1. Make sure your home is puppy proof by putting away any dangerous items that the puppy may try to chew on.

  2. Buy a training crate to put in your home, and place a blanket inside to give the puppy something soft to sleep on.

  3. Look for a food that is made for puppies, to meet all of the nutritional needs of your puppy.

Training

  1. Create a regular schedule for feeding, sleeping and potty training.

  2. Take your puppy around other puppies and humans so it can get used to them.

  3. Begin potty training the first day you bring your cocker spaniel puppy home.

  4. Take your puppy outside every few hours until it gets used to the idea.

Health

  1. Make sure your puppy has all of the required vaccines.

  2. Get all of the booster vaccines that are recommended by the veterinarian.

  3. Have your puppy spayed or neutered when it is the right age.

  4. Take your puppy to the veterinarian once a year.

Grooming

  1. Make sure to brush your puppy often with a soft bristled brush.

  2. Give the puppy baths with a mild puppy shampoo every couple of weeks.

  3. Make sure to clean the ears and around the eyes.

Tips

  1. Be consistent when training your puppy.

  2. Use a stern tone, but do not yell.

  3. Do not feed your puppy adult dog food, to avoid upsetting its stomach.
