Education Needed to Become a Manicurist

A manicurist is also known as a nail technician. There are many advantages to this profession as it offers beauty services to clients while you are able to sit rather than stand. As you build your clientele, you get to know all about your clients as they open up to you about their lives. Educational requirements are as follows.

Education Requirements for Manicurists

Nail technicians or manicurists are required to be licensed in all states. This means that specific educational guidelines must be followed. Education can vary by state, but typically the coursework is similar. Each state will have their own requirements as far as the age of a manicurist, for instance, some states allow a nail technician to train at the age of 16, but most states set the minimum age at 18. Most states also require a high school diploma or a GED, but you can still find some states that allow entrance after finishing the 8th grade.

The Actual Training Program

Typically manicurists in training attend a cosmetology school. The training program length depends on the state but the average time is about 12 months of full time study. The training prepares you for licensure of which you must pass before you can begin to work as a manicurist.

You are exposed to hands-on training more than book training. You will learn the latest trends in the field and then have a chance to practice on other students. As you approach graduation, you may have to work on clients that come into a beauty school to save money on services.
