Etiquette Guide for Cocktail Dresses
At some point in every woman’s life, she will inevitably receive an invitation that calls for cocktail dress attire. Therefore, it is important to learn what a cocktail dress entails ahead of time. Knowing this dress etiquette will prevent any embarrassing moments.
Knee-length Dresses
Generally speaking, a cocktail dress will be about knee-length. In some instances, a full-length dress will also work for the occasion, but definitely not necessary. However, do refrain from wearing a very short dress. Save that for a more informal event.
Skirts and Pants
Wearing a nice skirt or pair of dress pants is perfectly acceptable. However, do make sure to pair with a dressy top. Silk, satin, lace or women's tuxedo styles are all great choices. Never wear a pair of jeans to a cocktail party.
Be Modest
Do not reveal too much cleavage with a plunging neckline, but wear well-fitted clothing. A skintight dress will draw unwanted attention and give off the wrong impression.
“Little Black Dress”
Wear colors appropriate for the season. However, do keep in mind that darker colors are considered more formal. When in doubt, bring out the little black dress that every woman should have in her closet.
Dress Shoes
Pair the cocktail dress with a pair of dress shoes. High heels will work great, just make sure they are not overly exaggerated. Wearing a pair of dressy flats is fine, certainly for taller women.
Minimal Accessories
Do not over-accessorize. Wear a couple of small pieces, but leave the fancy diamonds for another occasion. Carry a clutch that matches with the chosen attire, and is a bit dressier. Do not carry a large handbag when wearing a cocktail dress.
