Garden and Patio Decorating Ideas

A decorative patio and garden area is an outdoor extension of the home. The décor chosen can reflect an individual’s style and taste, currently displayed in the home, or utilize an alternative decorating theme incorporating the natural color schemes and atmosphere of the outdoors.

With the variety of furnishings and garden materials available, decorating ideas for the patio and garden are readily available. Below are several ideas for creating an inviting decorative patio and garden area.

• Decorate the patio area with wicker, rattan or Adirondack wood furniture pieces for covered patios. For patio areas without a cover, choose furniture and seat cushion covers specifically made to weather outdoor elements.


• Add an outdoor decorative weather resistant floor covering such as indoor-outdoor artificial grass or an area-sized woven grass mat.


• Accessory the patio area with scented candles, solar lights, citron candles to deter mosquitoes and a bamboo screen.


• Bring the garden onto the patio with containers filled with assorted flowers, dwarf citrus trees and fragrant herbs.


• Line the outside perimeter of the patio with applicably sized plants or hedges to add an element of seclusion and privacy. Use trellises as an addition to the patio/garden area for colorful and fragrant vines.


• Expand outside the patio area into the garden with a paved walkway leading to an area with filled with a variety of exotic or traditional flowers, garden benches, reflective waterfall, decorative statuary and water fountain.  Place an arbor with trailing ivy at the entrance to the garden.
