Geriatric psychiatrists help the elderly through many struggles. The elderly are often dealing with problems such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia. They also may have trouble dealing with the emotional problems that come from some health problems. They may be unable to handle the loneliness and boredom they have living in a nursing home. Some worry about money or about growing older. Others are grieving over the death of friends and loved ones and dealing with their own fears of dying. The geriatric psychiatrist is the one who helps the elderly deal with these issues and move past them.
Geriatric psychiatrists also assist the elderly in dealing with mental disorders such as anxiety, depression and schizophrenia. Some of the elderly are also fighting substance abuse. Some geriatric psychiatrists work more often with medical schools, colleges and pharmaceutical companies to develop new treatments that will help geriatric patients. They conduct studies to further medical knowledge and also teach others.
There are many places for a geriatric psychiatrist to work. There is usually a demand for them just about anywhere in the country. Those who work at inpatient facilities such as nursing homes are often required to work nights, weekends and on holidays. This is because these are the times that are often the most difficult for geriatric patients. A geriatric psychiatrist may also be required to be on call often.
It is the responsibility of the psychiatrist to enhance the life of the geriatric patients that they care for. They work with the family and caregivers of their patients as well to be able to get the full picture of their patients' health. This also allows them to include the family in care.
