Gerontological Definition

Gerontology is the study of the biological and psychological changes of the body during old age. Gerontology is studying old age and elderly people to view changes in the body and the mind to help slow or reverse the process if at all possible.

  • Significance: Many people feel that studying gerontology is important. Not only does it help us figure out significant changes in the mind and body as well as the social changes in the lives of the elderly. This is an equally important study for younger adults because they will eventually be getting old as well and studying changes and ailments now could help prevent them in later generations.

  • Speculation: According to recent studies, it is estimated that by 2030 over 20% of the world's entire population will be elderly. Studying gerontology and life expectancy trends is very important considering there are more and more people entering old age as the baby boomers age.

  • Gerontology Education: When a person goes to school to study gerontology, there are several things that they will learn. A gerontology program may include courses in the various ways that old age affects the physical, emotional, mental, and social aspects of the aging. Bachelor and master degree programs are available in gerontology. This type of study could lead into many jobs in the healthcare field, social services, as well as research positions. The typical time frame to pursue a bachelor's degree in gerontology is four years. Many programs offer an additional master's degree program that can be completed within an additional two to three years.

  • Effects: Many people that study gerontology also go on to working with the elderly on an individual basis. Many elderly individuals will live healthy, independent lifestyles; several others will end up working with elderly people with health issues, and other limitations that may require special care. One of the many tasks that must be considered when studying old age is the financial effect of aging and what it costs to get old. Some studies in this field include; health care, retirement planning, insurance, and pensions.
