Gothic Architecture and Catholic Faith

In France during the 12th century, a new form architecture was born. The structure was the Basilica of Sait Denis-Wester Facade. It reached towards heaven and it heads east to west, which is symbolic of man striding towards God. There are so many details within Gothic Cathedrals that symbolize the very faith that the building houses.

Intricacy is a key component in gothic architecture. And there is meaning behind much of the details in the building. Not every building uses every aspect; however, here are some general commonalities in Gothic Cathedral Architecture and how they connect to the Catholic Faith.

The beauty of the cathedral: Gothic architecture is breathtaking. The cathedrals are considered a place to meet God, and a place to worship. Great pride was taken in making these structures the most beautiful buildings in their cities, to make it a place worthy of God worship.

Gothic cathedrals are built with an east to west position. You enter the Cathedral from the West and move towards the East. This is to symbolize movement in one's faith towards God.

Labyrinth. A labyrinth at first glance is like a maze. However, a main difference is that there are no wrong turns or dead ends in a labyrinth. There is a single path that leads towards the center, symbolizing walking towards God. Some see it as a symbol of redemption while others see it as a symbol of pilgrimage.

Eastern end chapels: At the Eastern end of the cathedrals are chapels. This is near the rising sun and it is the place of prayer and meditation.

Lightness and open spaces: Methods in Gothic Architecture favor using flying buttresses, allowing a simplification of the wall space. There is sense in making space for God.

Rose Window: A rose window is circular in nature, but within the stained glass portions are lines, circles, squares, and triangles. The stained glass usually depicts images from Biblical stories or characters.
