How to Build a Wine Storage Cabinet

Guide to Proper Red Wine Storage

Proper storage of red wine is crucial in maintaining its flavor and body. The ideal location for storing red wine is a specially designed wine cellar, especially if the wine is intended to be kept for more than six months. For those who don’t have access to a wine cellar, there are simple rules to follow which will ensure the best taste and character possible when the red wine is opened.

Store Red Wine Laying Down

Store red wine lying down as this will preserve the integrity of the cork. When cork dries out it shrinks, which allows oxygen to seep into the bottle. Oxygen decreases the shelf life of wine by causing it to spoil more quickly. Wine racks and wine refrigerators are made for storing wine at a proper angle and are a wise investment if you consume wine regularly.

Store Red Wine Away from Sunlight

Storing red wine in direct sunlight will cause it to warm up enough to go bad quickly. Even indirect sunlight can cause damage due to the ultra-violet rays. Store red wine in a cool, dark place and it will last longer and maintain its flavor.

Store Red Wine in a Cool Location

Red wine should be stored at about 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Storing red wine at higher temperatures, especially above 70 degrees, causes it to mature much too quickly, which will affect the flavor. If you are planning to drink your red wine within a couple of months, storage at a higher temperature is adequate, but if you purchase wine for long-term storage, invest in a wine refrigerator, which keeps the temperature constant.

Store Open Red Wine in the Refrigerator

Once red wine is opened, cover it with a cap and store it in the refrigerator. Open red wine goes bad quickly, so use open red wine within two to three days.
