How to Make Wine Stoppers
A wine stopper replaces the original cork after the bottle of wine is opened. It needs a handle so that it can be used repeatedly without a corkscrew. Wine stoppers are commercially available, and you can make one from common materials.
Items Needed:
- Drawer pull
- Headless screw
- Drill and bit set
- Cork
- Craft glue
- Purchase a drawer pull from a hardware store that has a large knob. This item has only one screw hole as opposed to a drawer handle that has two holes for screws.
- Buy a headless screw at the hardware store that fits into the drawer pull. Ensure the screw will extend at least half an inch out of the drawer pull when it is completely screwed into the drawer pull.
- Insert the headless screw into the drawer pull by turning it clockwise. Continue turning the screw until it reaches the limit of its travel.
- Attach a drill bit to your drill that is slightly smaller than the headless screw in the drawer pull. Drill a hole in the center of one end of a wine cork that has a depth of one-fourth inch. Ensure the hole is parallel with the sides of the cork.
- Place a small amount of craft glue onto the headless screw in the drawer pull. Screw the headless screw into the hole of the cork until the drawer pull is flush with the cork. Allow the craft glue to dry thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Test the wine stopper to ensure the drawer pull will stay on when you pull the cork from a wine bottle.
