Guide to Purchasing the Best String Trimmers

String trimmers are versatile tools that allow you to maintain your lawn. String trimmers keep weeds under control and trim any areas that are otherwise difficult to reach.  There are weed trimmers on the market for almost every need.  There are a lot of features that you will want to take into consideration whenever you are trying to find the best string trimmer to purchase.

Engine

Look at the engine type; it will be either two-cycle, four-cycle, battery or electric.  This is the most important thing to consider.  What will work best for you will depend upon how big your yard is, what you need to use your trimmer for, how thick the weeds are and how much power you are going to need.

Budget

Consider your budget.  Keep in mind that a gas engine will be more expensive to purchase and to fuel.  They also emit noise and fumes but will break down less and are easier to fix.

Shaft

Look at the type of shaft: boom, straight, curved, handlebars and braces.  These are designed to fit different cutting needs.  A straight shaft cannot be as easily maneuvered within a tight space but is easier to handle in a long, straight area.  A curved shaft is easier to maneuver in a tight area.  Shafts with handlebars are easier to use because they won’t hurt your back as bad.

Head

Look at the head type.  There are a lot of different choices here.  Some have a refillable spool so that whenever you run out of line you are able to roll up some more.  Others have a fixed line where this isn’t possible.  There are some trimmers that have two strings and thus can cut more efficiently but they do require more replacement line.  In order to determine what is best for you, think about how much trimming you need to do and how thick the weeds are going to be.  The thicker the weeds or the bigger the area, the stronger and more durable the head and strings will need to be.  You can also find some trimmers that have replaceable heads that will let you swap out the string for a metal cutting blade whenever you need to tackle thick, tall weeds or small brush.
