Hair Replacement Alternatives
Many men experience hair loss at some point in their lives, often owed to heredity. Hair transplants are a viable treatment for hair loss, although this is the most expensive option. Less expensive alternatives to hair replacement include oral medication, topical medication and vitamins.
Oral Medication
The production of dihydrotestosterone increases with age and causes male pattern baldness. Some medications treat this type of hair loss by reducing DHT production. Propecia is an oral medication with U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval that can delay the onset of male pattern baldness. Finasteride works in a similar manner and may cause some hair to grow back. Common side effects of these medications include hives, itching and rashes.
Topical Medication
Topical medications for hair loss are applied directly to the scalp. Minoxidil is the generic name for one such medication and has several brand names, one of which is Rogaine. Users apply this medication twice per day. It usually takes at least two months to achieve results. Common side effects include chest pains, dizziness, rapid heart rate, sudden weight gain and irritation to the scalp.
Vitamins
Hair loss may be caused by a vitamin deficiency. Vitamins B-6 and E are most closely involved with hair growth. Additional nutrients that are needed for hair growth include biotic and zinc. Specific amino acids can also help for treating hair loss. Nutritional supplements are most likely to be effective in treating thinning hair as opposed to complete hair loss. Supplements rarely cause side effects in therapeutic dosages.
