Foods to Keep a Heart Healthy

Healthy Foods for Kids

Getting your kids to eat healthy may not be an easy thing to do, but there are nutritious foods that taste great. If you have a picky child, try introducing new foods to the dinner table slowly. You can even come up with different ideas on how to serve healthier foods.

Fruits

Almost every fruit has natural sugars. Apples, oranges and pineapple tend to taste very sweet to kids. You can make a fruit salad of these foods for dessert rather than serving pie or cake at dinner. Another way to add fruit to your children's diet is breakfast. A slice of apple, cantaloupe or honeydew is good with low-fat milk, wheat toast and eggs.

Vegetables

Vegetables are essential foods for eating healthy. Like fruit, vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals. Children tend to shy away from salads but trying adding cheese or sliced turkey. Some kids may enjoy salad dressing such as ranch. A low-calorie dressing is ideal in this case.

Yogurt

Children may enjoy flavored yogurt instead of plain. Try making a yogurt smoothie with fruit for lunch. Combine strawberry, blueberry or some other yogurt flavor with bananas or fresh berries in a blender. The sweetness of the yogurt and fruit can make a delicious low-fat and healthy treat.

You can start off slowly with each healthy idea you have. If your kids still refuse to try something nutritious, try talking to them about good nutrition and how it can benefit them. Teaching your kids healthy eating habits early can give them a head start on making better choices in the future.
