Issues in Sports Health Wellness
Rehabilitation and injury prevention are important issues in sports health wellness. Athletes need to be invested in maintaining their health and limiting injuries. An athlete’s career can be over in an instant if they suffer an injury while training or participating in their sport. Avoiding some common issues in sports health wellness can add to an athlete’s success in the game and as a role model.
Performance-Enhancing Substances
Athletes sometimes take performance-enhancing drugs in order to improve their sports performance. These drugs are dangerous as they interfere with normal bodily functions. Anabolic steroids build skeletal muscle, and are appealing to athletes and bodybuilders. This type of steroid can be rubbed into the skin, injected into muscle or taken as a pill. EPO is a synthetic substance that produces red blood cells. The extra red blood cells make the body send increased oxygen to the muscles, which causes an increase in performance. These drugs have been banned by sports organizations because they are highly addictive and dangerous.
Overtraining
An exhaustive training program causes stress, muscle fatigue and serious bodily damage. The best training program includes massage and a variety of exercises and activities over a long period of time.
Age Limits
Many professional athletes plan to retire at 30 years of age. Keeping up a healthy lifestyle and wellness program will help athletes achieve this goal. A sports career can be cut short if a serious injury befalls an athlete. It would be irresponsible if that injury was caused by not following a good sports wellness plan.
Rehabilitation
Proper rehabilitation following an injury is important so the athlete can have full function of the injured site. To accomplish this goal an athlete will need to get a correct diagnosis, stabilize the injury and allow time to heal. It is also important to maintain other fitness requirements, like cardiovascular fitness. Doctors, orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists can help with rehabilitation to get the player back into the game.
Sports-Specific Injuries
Every sport has some sort of health and wellness issue. Contact sports are very dangerous to the body’s bones and muscles, with head injuries being very common. Each individual sport has its own health wellness issues and the trainers need to be educated about these issues.
