Homemade Camping Grill
A homemade grill is a convenient and essential component of any camping trip due to it being extremely quick, easy and inexpensive to construct. They're perfect for cooking simple foods such as hot dogs and s'mores and more complex ones like chicken breasts and hamburger patties.
Things You'll Need:
- Dry branches, logs and other wood
- Rocks, cement blocks or bricks
- Matches or a lighter
- Newspaper
- Grill rack, chicken wire or wire netting
- Charcoal (optional)
There are numerous ways to go about constructing your own makeshift camping grill and, as long as you do it safely, the choice is really up to you.
- Measure your grill rack to determine how wide the campfire should be. Do the same if you chose to use wire netting or chicken wire instead.
- Make your fire pit's outer barrier. This is an extremely important step as outdoor cooking can be disastrous if not conducted carefully. If using bricks or concrete blocks, stack them in a square or circle roughly the size of your grill rack. In order to make sure the fire is able to be completely contained, don't leave any gaps or spaces between the bricks. If you chose to use rocks, find the biggest ones you can for the barrier and use smaller ones to plug up any holes.
- Clear at least a one-and-a-half foot radius around the homemade grill. Removing loose twigs and dry leaves will help prevent your fire from spreading.
- Gather up your sticks, logs and other wood and stack them in the middle of the pit's circle. Make sure the pieces are completely dry since damp or waterlogged wood won't easily burn.
- Twist up a newspaper and place it in the center of the stacked wood.
- Add a small pile of charcoal to the stack.
- Light your fire by holding a match or lighter up to the rolled up newspaper. Place the grill rack or wire over the fire and make sure it's secure. Additional rocks or bricks can be placed along its sides to ensure it won't move during cooking.
