How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

The length of time that hair extensions last vary greatly between application type and type of hair extension used. Certain types are only meant to stay in for a week, while others can last months. Some are able to be styled with regular styling products and tools, while others are not. It all depends on the manufacturer of the different style of hair extension that you are using.

The two most common materials used for hair extensions are either human or synthetic hair. These can be applied in a few different ways. The way that they are applied as well as the material that they are made of will determine how long your extension will last.

Types of Hair Extensions

  • Synthetic hair - Synthetic hair extensions are a much more economical choice than are human hair extensions. There are different quality levels of synthetic hair as well. The better quality of extension that you buy the more longevity you will get from your extension. It is not advised to use any styling tool that produces heat on hair extensions that are made of synthetic materials. Synthetic hair extensions are washable and durable if you maintain them well.

  • Human hair - Human hair extensions are primarily imported and can be very pricey although they have many benefits that synthetic hair extension cannot offer. Human hair extensions are able to be styled any way that you want. You can dye them and style them with any type of hair product or styling tool you would normally use on your natural hair.

Application Styles

  • Clip In - Clip-in hair extensions are the safest type of hair extension and are not known to cause damage to your natural hair. These type of hair extensions are able to be applied yourself and are just as easily removed. They are a great option for someone that wants to try out hair extensions for a special occasion or to see if they like them. Clip in Extensions are usually only used for one day.

  • Weave - Weaving hair extensions into the roots of your hair through a process of small braids is called a weave. This application style can last for a while; however, they should be repositioned every six weeks so that the extra stress is not put on the roots of your natural hair causing damage. A weave can last for up to six months; however it will need to be repositioned every six weeks to maintain the roots.

  • Bonding - Bonding hair extensions is a process in which the hair extensions are attached to the roots of sections of your hair with a hair bonding glue. This application usually will last about a week before the adhesive begins to wear off. The less you wash your hair the longer they will last. Hair extensions applied with the boding process usually will last around one week.

  • Heat Sealing - This application style is only meant to be done with synthetic hair extensions. The synthetic hair extensions are braided into the natural hair at the root. Heat is then applied at the root to allow the synthetic material to slightly melt and form a bond to the root. These will stay on for about 4 to 6 months assuming that regular care and maintenance are done regularly.
