How Performance Mufflers Work
The exhaust system's purpose is to efficiently remove engine exhaust, taking it through the exhaust pipes and exiting out of the tailpipe of the vehicle. Performance mufflers are designed to improve the efficiency of the exhaust system, which has numerous advantages.
Performance mufflers are designed to achieve certain beneficial functions for your vehicle, generally involving two things: increasing the flow of exhaust and improving gas mileage. These are important considerations, making performance mufflers a good consideration for changes to your vehicle. How this works:
- Increases the flow of exhaust from your vehicle. The mufflers that come from the factory are made with smaller muffler channels. Because they are smaller, they are also more restricted. The problem is that this restriction decreases the flow of exhaust gases from the engine. Performance mufflers correct this problem with a larger size inner core. This larger inner core increases the exhaust gas flow from the engine. This, in turn, creates the potential for better horsepower for your engine. It decreases the pressure from the engine exhaust and helps it run more smoothly and efficiently.
- Improves gas mileage for your vehicle. With gas expensive as it is, the savings of mileage is most important. The increased flow of exhaust gases through the muffler's core improves fuel efficiency. By reducing the back pressure of these exhaust gases, the engine does not have to work as hard to get rid of them. Because the engine is turning with greater ease, the horsepower also increases.
