How To Adjust the Rear Axle on an ATV
ATV's or All Terrain Vehicle's come in many makes and models and although the mechanics are similar across most ATV models, it is best to consult your owner's manual or an ATV repair shop when it's time to adjust the rear axle on an ATV. If you are inclined to make repairs and adjustments yourself, you'll need the proper tools and an extra hand to assist you.
There are numerous makes and models of ATV's so repairing broken ATV axles will vary from make and model, however the general steps for troubleshooting are similar, as in the numbered steps below for replacing an axle. Typical problems requiring adjustment include bent axles, replacing worn bearings, axles popping out of the differential, and simple lubrication problems.
First refer to your ATV's owner’s manual for special instructions on repairs and adjustments to the axles of your quad.
Steps for replacing a bent or broken axle:
1. Raise your ATV off the ground and remove the tires.
2. Loosen the axle bolts only if you are replacing the axle.
3. Use a pipe wrench to hold the axle and a saw to cut the bent or broken part of the axle where the bolts are to be removed.
4. Slide the axle out through the brake disc on the ATV once the bolts are loosened.
5. Place the new ATV axle through from the side where the sprocket is.
6. Tighten the hub and axle nuts.
7. Replace or insert new cotter pins.
You may wish to consult with an ATV repair shop to help you make adjustments or repairs to your ATV. Often times, it takes two sets of hands--even for an ATV enthusiast who is mechanically inclined--to make ATV repairs or adjustments to axles.
