How To Build a Car Paint Booth

If you are wanting a professional finish on a vehicle you are painting, you will need a paint booth. One of the greatest problems with painting a vehicle with an aerosol system is avoiding dust, which could ruin the finish. To avoid this problem you can build a paint booth in your own garage for very little money. The unit can be constructed in an afternoon by someone with basic carpentry skills.

Supplies

  • Stepladder

  • Shop Vacuum

  • Eight pieces of one inch PVC pipe 12-feet long

  • Four lengths of one inch diameter PVC pipe eight feet long

  • PVC fittings eight three-way elbow one inch diameter

  • PVC fittings four one inch diameter basic connectors

  • Eye screws

  • Twine or string

  • Heavy Duty Clear Construction Plastic

  • Utility knife

  • Duct tape

  • Four large box fans

  1. Give the work space a thorough cleaning to remove any dust or particles. Use a shop vacuum to pick up the particles and remove them from the area.

  2. Construct the sides of the booth by putting together two of the 12 feet pieces of pipe. Use the basic connector.

  3. Repeat the process for the other side. Your side pieces should now measure 24 feet in length. Place the pieces on the floor eight feet apart in a parallel position. Put together with two lengths of the 8 foot PVC.

  4. Use four of the tri-cornered elbow connectors to complete the attachment on each corner.
Slide in a remaining piece of the eight foot pipe, into one of the remaining vacant ends of the tri-cornered fitting. The newly installed piece should be standing up vertically. Repeat this process for all four corners.  When complete, the unit will appear as an upside down four cornered table.

  5. Use the step ladder to screw the four eye hooks into the ceiling above the pipe outline on the floor.

  6. Trim about three feet of twine and tie to the eye screws.

  7. Use the remaining tri-cornered elbow connectors on the end of each vertical pipe.  Place the rest of the 8 foot pipe into the connectors.  The unit will now appear to be a giant pipe rectangle.

  8. Lash the twine around each of the top pipe connectors to lend support for the structure.

  9. Cut a large section of construction grade plastic to cover the top of the paint booth. Lay the plastic over the top of the PVC frame and use duct tape to secure it.

  10. Cut large sections of the plastic for all sides of the PVC frame making sure to overlap each one. Secure each with duct tape.

  11. Leave one end of the plastic free so the vehicle can be pulled in.

  12. Place four large box fans on the floor at one end of the booth.

  13. Trim out a piece of plastic from the end wall which are adjacent. These units will act as exhaust fans when the booth is in use.

  14. Use the duct tape to seal the plastic around the fans.
