How to Build a Car Engine

Repair shops generate millions of dollars each year building car engines. The estimated cost for building a car engine is roughly $1500 or more. Building a car engine is not an easy project, and it will take a considerable amount of time. Doing this yourself will save a great deal of money in the long run.

How to Build a Car Engine:

Step 1: Submerge the engine's new lifters in engine oil. Allow the lifters to soak in the oil for up to six hours.

Step 2: Install the engine's piston rings onto the piston, while ensuring that you are staggering them. Coat the engine's cylinder with your choice of oil treatment.

Step 3: Turn the engine's block over, in order to install the top portion the main and rod bearings. Apply the oil treatment to all visible sides of the bearings. Install the crank and install the bottom portion of the main bearings onto the bearing cap. Install the main bearing caps to hold the bearings in place. Torque according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Step 4: Turn the engine's block back to the other side. Install the rod bearings into the bearing caps onto the piston rod assembly per the manufacturer's specifications. Compress the piston rings onto the piston and secure the piston into the cylinder hole, using a rubber mallet. Slide the rod into the crank journal, while securing the piston. You will repeat this step for all remaining pistons.

Step 5: Turn the engine's block over again. Install the existing rod bearings into the bearing caps. Apply the oil treatment onto the bearing caps. Space and torque according to the manufacturer's specifications. Install the engine's camshaft and apply the oil treatment on it. Install the camshaft button, timing chain, and timing cover. Line up the timing marks, before securing the timing cover.

Step 6: Remove the engine's new lifters from the engine oil. Paint the engine galley any color you choose to aid the oil in lubricating the block. Install the engine's head. Ensure that the head gaskets are properly lined up without covering any holes. Torque the head according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Step 7: Install the engine's push rods and its rocker arms. Torque these parts according to the manufacturer's specifications. Install the manifold and the value covers. Install the engine into your vehicle. Attach connecting parts including carburetor, fuel pump, etc. according to the vehicle's owner manual.
