How To Deal With a Used Car Salesman

Used car salesmen have earned a negative reputation for being excessively talkative and using high pressure sales techniques.  If you are aware of this stereotype, you can work with a used car salesman more effectively.  Knowing how car salesmen operate can help you purchase a vehicle without feeling too much stress.

  1. Research the type of vehicle you want to purchase before going to a used car dealership.  You need to find out as much information as possible about the car you want to buy.  You can learn about car highlights and prices by using an online search engine.

  2. Greet the salesman with a handshake when he or she approaches you in the lot.

  3. Remain friendly and calm no matter what the salesman says.  You don’t know what type of pressure he or she is under to make a sale.  You need to take care of you and your purchase, not help with making a sale.

  4. Let the salesman know what you are looking for in a vehicle.

  5. Allow him or her to show you cars that may fit your needs.  This is a good way to learn about the salesman.  If you are shown vehicles that fit your needs, then you know he or she is listening to you.  If you are shown random cars that do not meet your needs, then you may want to find another dealership or salesman.  You want to know that you are being shown vehicles that meet your needs, not just cars that need to be sold soon.

  6. Ask questions to get to know the salesman and the cars being sold.

  7. Be honest with the salesman about your purchasing plans.  If you are just looking or you are not prepared to buy, state this upfront.  It helps you and the salesman during the buying process.

  8. Ask to see a manager or another salesman if you are feeling too much pressure.  You can always leave and return at another time.  Remember you need to take care of your needs, not satisfy a pushy salesman.
