How To Remove Chalky Looking Wax From Car Paint

Car paint develops a chalky look after repeated exposure to the elements. When painting a car, unless the chalky residue is removed, the new paint will have inconsistencies, and it will result in discoloration to the new paint. For this reason, it is essential to first remove the old, chalky residue before applying new paint.

Items Needed:

  • Bucket of warm water

  • Strong household detergent

  • Painting mask

  • Garden hose

  • Soft bristled brush

  1. Wear the mask when removing the chalky residue, because breathing the residue can be harmful.

  2. Add a few drops of detergent to the bucket of water. Soak the brush into the bucket of soapy water.

  3. Scrub the surface of the car with the brush, keeping the brush hydrated with the soapy water. Make sure to use plenty of the water. Clean all areas that are to be painted.

  4. Spray the car with water. You can use a pressure washer if you have one; but a garden hose with good pressure will work fine.

  5. Allow enough time for the car's surface to dry after spraying

  6. Inspect the surface by using your hand. Run your hand along the cleaned area. If no chalky residue comes off onto your hand, you are now ready to paint. If residue does come off onto your hand, repeat steps one through five.
