How To Remove Stains From a Swimming Pool
To remove stains for a swimming pool, you have to first determine what has caused the staining. It may be metal stains or it can be organic. Once you know which you are dealing with, you can take steps to remove them. Both types are easily removed, with the proper procedures and chemicals. Be sure to wear gloves and protective eye wear when handling pool chemicals, as they can splash and burn or irritate skin.
Removing Metal Stains:
- Take your pool water to be tested. If metals are shown to be in your water; that is probably what is causing your staining. This is a common occurrence from minerals in the water.
- Purchase a metal-removing chemical. Follow the directions on the package for how much to use for your pool. These chemicals work by combining the metals to make them large enough for the filter to filter out.
- Brush the stain once the chemicals are in the pool. Continue brushing at the stain for the next week or so or until it is completely gone.
Removing Organic Stains:
- This method is for pools that are using chlorine. If you have a non-chlorine system, use the alternate method.
- Shock the pool. You will have to heavily shock it. Use about 15 pounds for an in-ground pool and 10 pounds for an above ground pool. Follow package directions on if you should dissolve it in water before putting it into the pool or not.
- Brush the stained area after the chlorine shock is added to the water. Continue to brush the stains a few times a day. You should begin to see them getting lighter and lighter.
- If this does not seem to be working after a week or so, you can take a chlorine tablet and rub it directly over the stain for just a couple of seconds. Make sure you wear gloves while doing this.
Alternate Method for Removing Organic Stains:
- Buy pH minus powder from the pool store.
- Fill a sock with the pH minus powder.
- Wearing gloves, run the sock with the powder directly over the stains. This should take care of the stain. You may have to run the stains more than once.
