How To Use Auto Urethane Paint

Urethane paint is durable and tough and ideal for repainting your vehicle.  You will save money by doing the job yourself, instead of hiring a professional.  Despite doing the job yourself, you can manage the look of a professional paint job.  The project can be done easily from home and your car will look good as new.

Things you will need to use urethane paint:

  • Water sponge

  • Dishwashing detergent

  • Rubber gloves

  • Mineral spirits

  • Paper towels

  • Masking tape

  • 1,500 grit sandpaper

  • Clear plastic sheeting

  • Respirator

  • Paint sprayer

  • Urethane auto primer

  • Urethane auto paint

  • Urethane clear auto paint

  1. Wash the vehicle in a thorough manner with water and dishwashing detergent.  Wipe off any bird droppings and other visible contaminants.  Be sure to rinse the car well and let it dry.

  2. Put on some rubber gloves.  Rub the vehicle with mineral spirits or a degreasing solution.  Put on the spirits with some paper towels.  Let the car dry before you continue.

  3. Use some 1,500 grit sandpaper and press it lightly against the car.  Be sure to sand enough to dull the original paint layer.  Rinse off the car and let it dry.

  4. Move the vehicle to a paint booth of another enclosed location.  Cover areas that shouldn’t be painted with masking tape or sheer plastic.

  5. Take a respirator and put it on.  Apply a thin coat of urethane auto paint primer.  Squeeze the trigger of the paint sprayer slowly and let the paint come out in a steady manner.  The nozzle should be a foot from the car, and move it in a back and forth motion.  Let the primer dry for an hour before continuing.

  6. Put on the urethane auto paint in thin layers.  Let each layer dry for 15 minutes before applying another.  Keep adding layers of base color until the primer is covered.  Let the final coat dry for 90 minutes before moving on.

  7. Put on three thin coats of clear urethane auto paint and let it dry for 15 minutes between the coats.  Let the car dry overnight before moving it.
