How to Add Ant Control to a Mulch Pile

Mulch can often become the home of ants if the mulch is allowed to become too dry. There are a variety of ways that you can both treat and prevent ants from finding a home in the mulch in a yard. Keeping mulch moist is a great way to control ants in a mulch pile.

Supply List

  • Garden hose

  • Ant poison

  • Garden hoe

  1. Purchase ant poison from a local home improvement store. Dry ant poison typically comes in a powder or pellet form.

  2. Sprinkle the ant poison onto the top of the affected mulch pile where you have an ant problem. This poison can also prevent an ant problem from occurring.

  3. Stir the mulch up with a garden hoe to thoroughly mix the poison into the mulch. Be sure to mix the poison down into the bottom of the pile so that it can effectively reach all of the ants in the pile.

  4. Allow the poison to sit in the mulch pile for 72 hours so that it can effectively kill all of the ants in the mulch pile. It typically takes between 48 to 72 hours for the poison to kill of the ants.

  5. Use a standard garden hose to spray down the affected mulch that has been treated with ant poison.

  6. Stir the water into the mulch pile so that all of the mulch has been thoroughly moistened. Ants like to live in dry mulch, so if you keep it moistened, ants will avoid the area.

  7. Repeat steps 2-6 if the ant problem has not been remedied within 72 hours from the first application of the ant poison.

  8. Water the mulch on a weekly basis to keep it moist and prevent ants from infesting the area.
