How to Landscape for Ant Control
If you have flower beds or well landscaped areas in your yard, you must protect yourself against ant infestations. Ants often make nests in areas of dirt that are easy to get to so make sure that you create borders and add repellents to landscaped areas to make it difficult for ants to build their nests.
- Place rocks and gravel in landscaped areas to deter ants from creating nests. Ants will dig nests into the ground so create borders around dirt areas to make it difficult for them to do this.
- Make sure that all food items are picked up and cleaned away from areas in your yard. Food and trash will attract ants and they will most likely nest once they have found a food source. Plash trash bins in your garage and shed to make it harder for ants to get into your garbage and eat discarded food.
- Sprinkle diatomaceous earth or other natural insect killers around garden beds and backyard areas. These types of products will be safe for people and pets to be around while killing the ants that are in your yard.
- Place plants around your yard or in flower beds that naturally repel ants. Marigolds and tansy will repel ants with their smell as well as add extra beauty to landscaped areas.
- Make sure that plants and shrubs in your yard are well manicured and all holes are filled in. This will provide less areas for ants to gather and give you an opportunity to see if there are any nests in your yard as well.
