How to Add Wheel Weights to a Garden Tractor

If you own a tractor and have a problem with it not getting enough traction you should consider putting on some wheel weights. They will provide you with the traction you need to prevent the tractor from sliding or getting stuck. It would be a lot cheaper than purchasing some new wheels.

Installing wheel weights on your tractor is something you can easily do yourself by following a few simple steps.

  1. Use a mixture of soap and water to clean the rims of the wheels. This should be done before you add on the wheel weights. It will prevent the dirt from being trapped in the rim by the weights, which would eventually lead to the area becoming rusted. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you remove as much of the dirt and grime as you possible can. You may need to use a commercial cleaner, which can be purchased at most automotive parts stores. There are several brands of cleaner on the market, but if you are unfamiliar with the different brands of commercial rim cleaner you could get some recommendations from the salesperson in the store.

  2. Secure the wheel weights to the rims of the tractor by using the attached bolts. Be careful not to over tighten the bolts because you could easily strip them during the process. You want them to be secure, but not so tight that they would be difficult to remove.

  3. Inspect the bolts holding the wheel weights in place at least once a month to make sure they are secure. This would also be a good time to remove the weights from the wheels to clean them.
