How to Build a Pulling Garden Tractor

Tractor pulling is a motorsport event throughout the United States, Australia and Europe. The sport requires a tractor to pull a heavy sledge/sled through mud, and the person who pulls the sled the farthest wins. To begin to prepare to participate in a pull, you must first build your pulling garden tractor.

Supply List

  • Tools

  • Supercharged engine parts

  • High-performance engine parts

  • High-performance transmission parts

  • Paint

  • Accessories (optional)

  1. Determine a budget for your build. You must decide upon the class you are competing in. Different classes require different qualifications and tractor specifications. These costs add up based on the special features need to race in each category.

  2. Figure out whether you can financially come up with enough money for the build. If not, you may want to seek out businesses willing to fund your project. These establishments typically want you to advertise the business on your tractor.

  3. Acquire a tractor. You will want to find an old tractor to convert to a pulling garden tractor, because a new one is not required and costs too much money to enter in a tractor pull. You do not need to find a tractor in perfect condition. One with a transmission, engine and axles in working conditions suffices the project’s needs.

  4. Take apart the current engine in the tractor, and replace the old components with supercharged parts.

  5. Convert the gears of the tractor’s transmission to handle an increased output from the engine. The clutch needs to be modified as well. A double-disc clutch with an increased spring pressure works adequately for tractor pulling.

  6. Choose new tires and wheels that allow the tractor to move quickly.

  7. Paint the garden tractor, so it looks appealing. Although looks are not the most important aspect of building a pulling tractor, you are going to compete in a spectator sport. Do not forget that the company you are advertising for or any sponsors you have are looking for you to represent them positively.
