How to Change a Garden Tractor Tire

A quality garden tractor will last for years to come with proper care and maintenance. Part of this regular maintenance is replacing the tires when they become worn down. Changing a garden tractor tire is a quick and easy process that you can complete yourself in no time.

  1. Remove the air valve from the tractor tire to allow some of the air to escape from the tire.

  2. Attach a valve wrench to the valve assembly of the tire, and gently pull the valve towards you to allow the air to escape from the tractor tire.

  3. Place a cargo strap around the tire, and pull the strap tightly until the rest of the air is expelled from the tractor tire. Releasing the air will decrease the amount of tension on the tire's bead.

  4. Add a small amount of dish soap around the perimeter of the tire where the tire's beading is touching the rim. This will allow the tire iron to easily slide between the tire's beading and the tractor tire rim.

  5. Place a tire iron between the beading of the tire and the and the rim and work around the perimeter of the tire to pry up the tire's beading.

  6. Remove the tire from the tractor by pulling on the tire so that it is released from the tractor.

  7. Place the new tire onto the tractor rim ensuring that the tire's beading is resting on the rim of the tractor.

  8. Apply a small amount of dish soap around the edge of the tire's beading where it comes into contact with the rim.

  9. Use a tire iron to pry the tire onto the rim working around the perimeter of the tire until it has been installed onto the rim of the tractor.

  10. Check the air pressure in the other tractor tires and make note of the PSI of each.

  11. Inflate the new tractor tire to the same PSI as the other tires on the tractor for balance.
