How to Add a Braid Extensions to Black Hair

Braid extensions are very popular on black hair as it also helps the hair to grow. African Americans of all ages enjoy the benefits and creative look of braid extensions. Braid extension can last for couple month when done right and maintained properly. Learning how to do this technique takes some practice, but is well worth it.

Things you'll need:

  • Hair clips

  • Fine-tooth comb

  • 100% Kankelon hair

  • Hair grease

  • Small black rubber bands

  • Boiling hot water

  1. Begin at the nape of the neck and use a fine-tooth to make a horizontal part. Make sure the part is even with the hairline.

  2. Make a second part that is vertical to the previous parted row. This part should create a small section of hair that is about a 1/2-inch square.

  3. Hold the Kankelon hair and with both hands separate it to a 1/2 inch thick piece of hair. Hold the piece of Kankelon hair and draper it over the forefingers on both hands. Grasp the length of the hair in your palms.

  4. Grab the small parted section of the hair at the scalp between the thumb and the index fingers. Make sure you are holding the Kankelon hair firmly while doing this. Take your left thumb and index finer and tightly wrap the Kankelon hair around the parted hair section to make a "knot" at the scalp.

  5. Braid the Kankelon hair mixed in with the real hair down past the length of the real hair. Allow your self at least an inch or so braiding past the real hair.

  6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 until the entire head is braided completely.

  7. Secure the ends of the braid by dipping them into a cup of boiling water for a few seconds. This will keep the hair from unraveling. The ends may also be secured with black rubber bands if the hair is braided all the way down to the very end.
