How to Change a Flat Tire on a Bicycle

How to Adjust Bicycle Handlebars

When putting a bicycle together it is important that you consider the size of the rider. The handlebars need to be properly adjusted to the correct height to prevent unnecessary stress and strain. This is a quick and easy process that is quite simple to complete.

Supply List

  • Wrench

  • WD-40 (optional)

  1. Locate the hexagon-shaped bolt that is in the middle of the handlebars. This is the bolt that holds the handlebars in place.

  2. Use a standard wrench to loosen the bolt that is currently holding the bicycle handlebars in place. If the bolt is stuck you may want to spray a small amount of WD-40 onto the bolt to help it loosen up.

  3. Remove the bolt so that the handlebars are able to move freely.

  4. Adjust the handlebars to the desired height for the person who will be riding the bike. Slide the handlebars up or down until they have reached the desired height.

  5. Make sure that the handlebars are straight. You can determine if the handlebars are straight by lining up the front tire of the bike with the handlebars alignment.

  6. Replace the hexagon-shaped bolt that you removed earlier.

  7. Tighten the bolt back into place while holding the handlebars in the desired position. You may want to have someone else help you by either holding the handlebars in place or tightening the bolt for you so that the handlebars do not move while you are tightening the bolt.

  8. Have the rider of the bicycle mount the bike to see if the handlebars are at the correct height. If not you can loosen the bolt and readjust the handlebars as necessary.
