How to Adjust Prescription Glasses
All eyeglasses eventually get bent out of shape over a period of time. The shape can become twisted and the screws holding the actual frame together can become loose or even fall out. With the correct tools, eyeglasses can be adjusted from the comfort of your own home instead of going to an eyeglass care center.
- Stand in front of a mirror while wearing the eyeglasses. Look at the glasses carefully to see where they are bent and out of shape. Pay close attention to any irregularities in fit of the glasses.
- Place a very soft towel on the counter. The towel will help to catch any of the tiny screws from dropping off the counter. The towel also will protect the lens from becoming scratched or chipped in any way.
- Check for loose screws. Tighten them up or replace them if they needed. The screws are found at the joints that fold. An “arm” will wrap over the ear and then connect with each lens. Now stand in front of the mirror again with glasses on and look for other problems or spots where the frame is out of shape.
- Use needle-nose pliers or your finger and gently adjust the arms of the glasses. Do this very carefully so as not to break the glasses. Carefully make a small bend to correct the arm on first one side, then the other. After bending an arm, put glasses on to check out the fit of the glasses.
- Use pliers again to adjust the nose bridge pads if the glasses have them, which are found at the spot where the glasses rest on the nose. The pads are usually plastic. Adjust very carefully and slowly checking the fit after each adjustment.
- Adjust the bridge of the glasses by carefully using the hands to bend into shape. To do this, hold frame in one hand and do the adjustment with the other hand. Either push up or pull down on the frame to get the correct fit. The eyeglasses should fit much better now and fully adjusted.
