How to Advertise Free Horses
As your horse ages, you may find it becomes more difficult for him to do the things you want to do. If you don’t have the money or space to keep him, you might be inclined to find him a new family. When this happens, selling your horse can be hard, because other high-class equestrians want the same things you want from a horse. Giving away your horse can help him find a home.
- Ask your circle of equestrian friends if they know anyone who wants a horse. Sometimes people with only one or two horses want another to keep the others company. They may not do any events or serious riding with the companion horse, but they will be able to give it a good and loving home with other horses.
- Post a flier at your local stable or fairgrounds. Many events occur at these locations and you may be able to target the equestrian population. Post in high traffic areas such as entryways or on barn doors.
- Leave a flier with riding companies. Because there is such a high frequency of people going in and out of these businesses, you have a chance to reach a lot of people. Better yet, many people who are enrolled in riding lessons are just starting out and don’t have a horse. They may not care if the first horse they get is on the older side or isn’t purebred.
- Advertise in your local newspaper classifieds section. Many newspapers have an agricultural, farm animals, or horses section. Most newspapers also have an online version, but you may have to pay extra for an electronic ad.
- Place an ad online at a website such as equine.com. This site has a “free horses” category where you can post that allows you to include sex, height, weight, disciplines and temperament information as well as photos.
- When giving away any free animal, make sure to research their new home and owners! Sometimes an unqualified or unprepared person may want your animal just because it’s free. Give your pet to a responsible owner with a suitable home.
