How to Appeal Against Car Parking Fines

Finding a ticket on your parked car is one of the most frustrating and annoying experiences. If you have the unfortunate experience of getting a ticket, you can file an appeal against the car parking fines, but first observe your surroundings and notate as much as possible.

  1. Keep your cool if you find a ticket. Do not take your frustration out on the parking enforcement officer if you return to your vehicle while he or she is issuing the ticket. This will only make the situation worse.  Ask the officer the reason for issuing the ticket and notate the reason given.

  2. Observe your surroundings. Look for road markings and signs in the area. Check if the signs are visible or have contradictory information.  Look at the parking lines to see if there are any debris, leaves, litter or any impediments that affect your ability to see the lines. Take digital pictures of these impediments to document your appeal case.

  3. Contact anyone who witnesses the incident to help you appeal your ticket.

  4. Contact your city office for information regarding the appeal process. Depending on your area, you may be able to file an appeal online, or go in person to the office. Find out how many days you have in order to file an appeal, because many jurisdictions have appeal time limits. Follow whatever appeal process your local enforcement office has in place.

  5. Compile all your appeal documents together. Do not give invalid excuses. Use valid legitimate reasons on your appeal.

  6. Fill out the appeal documentation completely. Most jurisdictions require your name, address, citation number, daytime phone number, license plate number, copy of the citation, etc.

  7. Wait for the result of the appeal. Depending on the jurisdiction, it can take up to 30 days.
