How to Apply Masonry Paint
Masonry is a durable material, but there may be times when it needs to be painted. A lot of people paint their masonry for decoration, but it can be painted to prevent damage from water. Masonry paint seals the surface, but to ensure that the paint protects the masonry, you must apply it properly.
Materials Needed:
- Masonry paint
- Heavy-nap roller
- Hose
- Muriatic acid cleanser
- Rubber gloves
Preparing the Surface
- Clean the masonry with a rag and muriatic acid cleanser. Paint will not adhere to a dirty surface. Make sure to wear rubber gloves, so that the muriatic acid cleanser will not come in contact with your skin.
- Rinse all of the muriatic acid cleanser off the masonry with a hose.
- Wait for the masonry to dry. This can take several hours. It is essential that the masonry be completely dry before beginning to paint.
Painting the Surface
- Paint the masonry with masonry paint. Use a heavy-nap roller to apply the paint. It is important to choose a heavy-nap roller, since the masonry paint is a lot thicker than ordinary paint. Masonry paint is thicker because it is elastomeric, which means that is made especially for rough surfaces and to fill gaps.
- The paint should be applied in parallel lines, overlapping each line with the one before by about 50 percent.
- Allow the paint to dry. This can take several hours.
- Once the surface is dry, you can determine if another coat is needed. Most of the time, one coat is sufficient.
