How to Remove Masonry Paint

Masonry paint that is chipping or peeling can make a home look unkempt. Not only does the paint chip but the colors can also fade. The paint can be hard to remove when it is in bad shape. There is a way to remove it that will not harm the masonry.

How to Remove Masonry Paint

Materials Needed

  • Masonry paint remover gel

  • Cloth strips

  • Putty knife

  • Bucket

  • Mild liquid dish detergent

  • Scrub brush with soft bristles

  1. Purchase a jar of masonry paint remover gel from your local home improvement or hardware store. Cut up several cloth strips. There should be enough strips to cover the entire area.

  2. Open the jar of gel. Take a putty knife and apply it on the masonry paint. Work on a small section at a time. Once the gel is applied to one small section, place the cloth strips over the area.

  3. Allow the cloth strips to sit on the area for 60 seconds. Remove the cloth from the area. You should notice all of the paint on the cloth.

  4. Continue to apply the gel and cloth strips following the above steps until the entire area is complete. Inspect the area for any paint that was not removed. If paint is there, reapply the gel and strips to those areas.

  5. Add 1 gallon of warm water to a bucket and pour in ¼ cup of mild liquid dish detergent. Dip a scrub brush in the bucket and swish it around to mix the cleaning solution. Clean the area with the scrub brush and cleaning solution. Rinse the area with clean water and allow it to dry.
