How to Apply Sun Screen Film to Residential Windows

If your home has single pane windows, they may not be energy efficient. By applying a sun screen film, often referred to as a solar screen, to your residential windows you can block out the UV rays of the sun, therefore reducing the cost of your cooling bills in the summer months.

  1. Wash your hands before working with the solar window film so that you do not leave grease or dirt on the surface of the window film when working with it.

  2. Fill a standard spray bottle with water, and secure the lid. You want to be sure that the spray bottle that you are using has a setting for a fine mist so that you can lightly spray the surface of the solar window film.

  3. Carefully remove the backing on the solar window film. You want to be very careful when doing this so that the solar window film does not become stuck to itself in the process; work it off slowly.

  4. Spray down the entire surface of the solar window film with the water in your spray bottle set to a fine mist. You want it to be wet enough to help it adhere to the surface of your window.

  5. Wash the window that you plan to put the solar window film on with a commercial window cleaner or vinegar, and then wipe dry with a clean microfiber towel.

  6. Spray down the now clean window with your spray bottle of water set to a fine mist so that the entire surface of the window is thoroughly wet. This will help you to easily position the solar window film once in place.

  7. Place the solar film onto the top edge of your window lining up the top corners, and then work your way down the glass until you have reached the bottom of the window.

  8. Repeat this process for each window that you are going to be using solar window film on.
