How to Fix Frost on Residential Windows

If you have single pane windows and live in a climate that is prone to harsh cold winters, then you have probably experienced frost on the inside of your windows from time to time. This frost forms due to the warm air in your home colliding with the cold surface of your window, causing frost to form.

  1. Remove the frost from your windows by wiping down the windows with a wet rag dipped in warm water. The warm water will remove the ice that has formed on the surface of the glass. If your frost is very thick, you may want to use a spatula or ice scraper to remove most of it first, and then wipe it down with a warm wet rag.

  2. Inspect the perimeter of the window to see if cold air is being allowed to leak in from somewhere. This is usually what causes frost to form on the inside of residential windows.

  3. Caulk any open areas where the cold is being allowed to enter your home. Not only will this help with the frost on your windows, it will also help to lower your energy bills by keeping the heat inside your home.

  4. Consider using a window insulation kit on the windows where frost is forming. This will prevent the cold air outside from entering your home and meeting with the warm air inside, leading to frost formation on the surface of the window.

  5. Purchase a dehumidifier if you do not want to cover your windows with plastic and place it in the room where you are experiencing problems with frost on your windows. This will remove the moisture from the air so that it cannot cause frost to form on the surface of your window.
