How to Apply to MBA Schools

Applying to school for a Master of Business Administration is a huge step in your career. It can be overwhelming to keep track of all the things needed to get the application process started. A little organization can help your application process run smoothly.

  • Request transcripts. Before you apply to an MBA school, request transcripts from all previous schools. This includes junior colleges and high school. It can take a few weeks for schools to return transcripts.

  • Get a calendar. Mark all important dates on the calendar including application deadlines and entrance exam dates.

  • Take the General Management Admissions Test. This test is an entrance requirement for most business schools. Have your scores forwarded to the schools for which you are applying. This test should be taken about six months before the application deadline.

  • Complete the application. When completing the entrance application, double and triple check your work. Ensure all boxes and blanks are completed. Check that you have written your name on the application. Failure to respond to all questions can result in an application denial. Once you have completed your application, make a copy for your personal record before sending it to the school.

  • Polish your resume. Some business schools may ask for a professional resume to accompany your application. Include all professional and volunteer experience. Include references to any work you may have had published. Be careful not to pad your resume. Being dishonest on your resume can result in a denial to business school.

  • Attend an interview. Competitive business schools may have an interview process with potential students. Do not be shy during the interview. Speak up often and stand out.
