How to Apply to an Art College
All guidelines of art colleges should be reviewed before you apply. There are certain admission prerequisites or requirements that you need to follow. You’ll also need a portfolio of your artwork, a letter of recommendation and an essay or statement of intent.
- Check out several art colleges to decide which one is best for you. Make sure you find out the school reputation and read over all their guidelines. Also, decide if you would feel more comfortable in a small or a large size class.
- Fill out an admissions application and pay the application fee. Follow the regular admissions procedure. Students who recently graduated from high school or completed a GED need a high school diploma and transcript or GED scores. Graduate and transfer students need college transcript and course descriptions.
- Create a portfolio of your artwork for review by the college rep or admissions counselor. Admission or rejection to an art college is based partly on your portfolio. Each school may have different requirements and format.
- Get a letter of recommendation if you’re a undergraduate student. The letter should be from someone that has looked at your art and is familiar with your academic achievements. The letter should be in the office of the college before the application deadline.
- Write an essay or statement of intent to describe your education and career objectives or goals. It should be between 250 and 800 words. Undergraduate and graduate students need a statement of intent.
