How to Bathe Your German Shepherd

If you own a German Shepherd, you may be wondering how to bath it, as well as how frequently it should be bathed. This will depend on the quality of their diet as well as the time of year. It is important that you do not bath them too often though, as that can lead to their skin becoming dried out.

  1. Brush your German Shepherd regularly to ensure that their coat does not become tangled. It is best to brush them immediately before a bath to ensure that any mats and tangles are thoroughly removed before bathing.

  2. Locate all of the materials that you will need to give your German Shepherd a bath and place them together in the bathroom by the bathtub for easy access while bathing your German Shepherd. You will want to have your shampoo, brush, towel and blow dryer handy to make the process easier.

  3. Coax your German Shepherd into the tub if he or she is too large for you to lift them into the bathtub. You can use a treat that they like to coax them into the bathtub easily in order to make it easier for you.

  4. Turn on the water and adjust the temperature to a comfortable one for your pup. It is best to use warm water to bath your dog. Cold water will make them want to get out, and make the process harder for you, and hot water can dry out their skin. Luke warm water is the best choice.

  5. Wet down your German Shepherd using a shower sprayer or a large cup. Be sure that the area under his tail, paws and neck are thoroughly saturated.

  6. Apply dog shampoo to your dog’s coat, and then massage it in paying extra attention to exceptionally dirty areas.

  7. Allow the shampoo to sit on your dog’s coat for approximately five minutes so that it has a chance to absorb the excess dirt and oil from your dog’s coat.

  8. Rinse your dog thoroughly being careful not to get shampoo into your its eyes as you rinse away the shampoo from your dog.

  9. Remove your pup from the bathtub, and dry with a towel until they are wet but not saturated.

  10. Blow dry your German Shepherd's coat with a standard household blow dryer until the coat is thoroughly dry.

  11. Brush your dog after a bath to ensure that the hair is not tangled, as well as to remove any loose hair that came out during the bathing process.
