- Have your female German Shepherd checked over by your veterinarian thoroughly to ensure that she is in good health and will be able to carry a litter of pups successfully. You do not want to find out after your German Shepherd female is pregnant that there are complications that could have been prevented.
- Ensure that your German Shepherd is not suffering from hip dysplasia. This is a common ailment in the breed. If your dog is suffering from this condition it is not recommended that they are bred because the predisposition for this condition can be passed on to the pups in the litter.
- Contact an experienced German Shepherd breeder in the area to ask any questions that you may have about the breeding process and proper care of the pups. Most breeders will be more than happy to answer a couple of questions for you.
- Locate a stud to breed your female German Shepherd. You want to find a male that has superior lineage and proper paperwork so that your pups are considered to be qualityGerman Shepherd puppies.
- Transport your German Shepherd to the home of the male stud so that they can get to know each other and breeding can take place as naturally as possible.
- Set up arrangements with the owner of the stud so that you both agree to the terms and conditions of the sale of the puppies. The standard practice is that the owner of the stud gets to choose the pick of the litter in return for the services of the stud.
- Bring your German Shepherd to the veterinarian a couple of weeks after you suspect that she has become pregnant so that you can verify the pregnancy.
