How to Be a Funeral Pallbearer

When a family endures the lost of a family member, it is the love and support of family and friends that helps the grieving process. For a man, being a pallbearer can be one of the greatest expressions of support he can show to the family. It is his job to carry the body to its final resting place.

Being a funeral pallbearer is an honor that has been voluntarily taken and accepted by men of all ages. It is the responsibility of the pallbearers to carry the casket, usually from the funeral service to the hearse, and then from the hearse to the gravesite or mausoleum. Originating from the word “pall”, which was a cloth used to drape over a coffin, the term “pallbearer” was the person who carries, or bears, the coffin that the pall covered. The duties of a pallbearer are sometimes different amongst various cultures, but overall, it’s a position appreciated and revered for centuries.

If you decide to be a pallbearer, complete the following:

  1. Contact the family member(s), or whoever is responsible for the funeral arrangements, and inform them that you would like to be a pallbearer at their loved one’s funeral.

  2. At the funeral service, follow the directions of the pastor or funeral director. This person will give you clear instructions and an overview of what you will be doing. Be sure you are clear on your duties before you begin your role.

  3. Line up as directed with the other pallbearers. Make sure cell phones are silent; and remain calm and still until you begin your duties.

  4. Walk slowly and steady while carrying the casket. Be sure to keep pace with the other pallbearers.

Once your duties have concluded, be sure to follow any further instructions.
