How to Become a Better Photographer

Photography is an art form that requires technical skills in addition to natural talent. The key to living up to your fullest potential as a photographer is consistent practice and thinking outside the box.  If you are an amateur photographer, there are several simple tips you can follow to improve your skills and learn how to take exceptional shots.

  • Forget about people around you.  Amateur photographers sometimes feel embarrassed when trying to shoot from unconventional angles.  The best rule to follow when you are taking photographs in public is to forget about everyone around you, and focus on the task at hand.  Bend down to the ground if you need to, or jump up to get a unique shot.  Don’t be afraid to experiment with your positions.

  • Evaluate old photos that you consider mediocre.  While it may be tempting to throw away unsuccessful photographs, going over them several times can help you get better.  Look at your old photographs and ask yourself where you want wrong.  Note what aspects of your old photographs worked and which did not.  This can help you determine what you need to work on.

  • Go out shooting as often as you can.  Don’t let a few bad photographs discourage you.  Practicing often will help you improve your skills and find your voice as an artist.

  • Study photographs that you love to find the elements that make them successful.  Look at your favorite photographs and think about what makes them so special.  Try to incorporate your discoveries into your own work.

  • Get to know your camera.  How you set up your camera has a big impact on the way your photographs look.  Take the time to read through the instructions manual.  Try different settings to see what effect they have on the outcome.  Knowing how to manipulate your camera to your advantage can help you reach your artistic goals faster.
