How to Become a Commercial Auto Dealer

Commercial auto dealerships sometimes sell a variety of vehicles, but they normally specialize in commercial vehicles such as large trucks, buses, cargo vans and semi trucks. Other then the types of vehicles you sell, becoming a commercial auto dealer is very similar to selling any other vehicle type.

  1. Acquire a commercial auto dealer's license. Because every state is different, you will need to read your state's requirements in order to get your commercial dealer's license. Some states will require that you have a number of qualifications met before getting your license. It can be much more difficult to get a dealer's license then a regular business license. Great credit, a lot to place vehicles, and a commercial driver's license may all be required depending on your state.

  2. Find a large lot with an office building that is on a high traffic street if possible. Lots that are located right off of an interstate or a high traffic highway are usually best. Many of your commercial auto dealership customers will find you by doing this.

  3. Get your inventory. It is best to always have a well stocked inventory on hand. This shows customers that you are ready to do business and many customers will stop due to seeing something they are interested in. You should have at least one of every type of commercial vehicle you are selling at all times.

  4. Hire salesmen for your commercial auto dealership. Even if you plan to manage the dealership yourself, you will want salesmen. Pay them based on performance, at least at first. This will give you the opportunity to evaluate your employees without paying them more then they are worth.
