How to Become a Licensed Auto Dealer
If you want to start an auto dealership, it is essential that you get the proper licensing. Every state is different and has its own laws regarding business start ups. No matter which state you live in, you will need to get your license in order to resell cars legally.
- Check with your state to see what business licensing you need as well as the requirement for obtaining your auto dealers license. Getting your dealers license isn't very easy. You must apply and be qualified in order to do so. In many cases this requires you to have excellent credit and sometimes you must already have a lot in order to place your inventory.
- Get an inventory. Once you are approved for your dealers license you will need an inventory in order to make any money. You can choose to sell new cars or used cars. Weigh the pros and cons of each if you are undecided.
- Make sure your lot is in a convenient location. Much of an auto dealerships business comes from people passing by. Having your lot right off an interstate or on a busy street is ideal. Always have a good amount of inventory on hand because your vehicles will act as your advertisement to people passing by.
- Advertise your business. This can be done in many different ways. Placing a large ad in a local newspaper is still very popular when promoting an auto dealership. You can also get local advertising spots on television and radio. Always give your business card out to everyone you know and meet. Even if they have no intention of buying a vehicle at that moment, they may remember you when they do need one.
